Take Action and Enroll in the Writing for Digital and New Media Class at the University of Illinois at Chicago
Chicago, IL – The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) has opted to begin a new minor under its’ current English Major for the upcoming fall called, Professional Writing. English 383, also known as, Writing for Digital and New Media is one of the new. Other classes under the subsidiary subject are English 381 (Advanced Professional Writing), which will also be taught by Dr. Christian fall 2016, English 382 (Editing and Publishing), and English 384 (Technical Writing). Aside from the three other classes, this class entails learning the ins and outs of writing for magazines, newspapers, and any other digital platforms, along with developing and operating websites. Students should enroll because the subject itself because it offers the opportunity to learn the expectations and requirements of reporters. Though this course is only offered during the spring semester, students should still make preparations to make this addition to their course load if they want experience in this field. The class currently has 18 students enrolled. Alondra Cambray, current senior says, "Even though I didn't know what I was getting myself into when I signed up for the course, I'm glad that I was able to take part in this class. All the information that professor Christian has taught us makes me feel more confident that I'll be able to kick start my career in writing. In particular, learning to build a website was helpful because we're able to show not just those skills but also incorporate everything we've learned in the semester." UIC is known for providing its’ students with a world class education within a city of diversity. What better place to learn techniques and be educated on the media than within a city that is constantly evolving? Just like this city and the media, the lessons and subjects students indulge in will continue to evolve, which will allow for students to be up-to-date on current writing styles and digital requirements. This course will require more than just using a textbook; it requires for student to have hands on experience. Students will work with experienced faculty member, Dr. Margena Christian, who has a plethora of knowledge and is a Nationally published editor and writer. “Writing for Digital and New Media is a great class to prepare students for a taste of what backpack journalism requires,” said Dr. Christian.
